“Werther” is a four-act opera composed by Jules Massenet, with a libretto by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet, and Georges Hartmann, based on Johann von Goethe’s famous novel. Premiered in 1892 at the Vienna State Opera, the work captures the spirit of the Sturm und Drang movement and reflects the social tensions of the 19th-century bourgeoisie, still bound by rigid moral norms.
The plot revolves around Werther’s impossible love for Charlotte, who is engaged to another man. Despite his pleas, she asks him to keep his distance, driving him to deep despair that culminates in tragedy. With themes such as rejection, obsession, and the idealization of love, Werther remains a landmark of Romanticism and a reflection on universal human emotions.
