Visit La Sombrería Cultural Center for a unique exhibition where wood comes to life.
"Memories with a Wooden Soul," an exhibition by artisan
Manuel Villagra, features dioramas that recreate everyday scenes from 1970s and 1980s Chilean households. These scenes are animated by hand-carved wooden automatons, each set in motion by a simple crank.
The artist's creations are inspired by his own childhood memories: Sunday afternoons in the backyard, the warmth of a family barbecue under the grapevine, classic arcade games, and the iconic hat shop, "Donde Golpea El Monito"—a place that lives on in both his personal history and the collective memory of Santiago.
Since 2015, Manuel Villagra has dedicated himself to the beautiful craft of creating automatons, a skill inspired by his father's work as a lathe operator who also brought unique wooden pieces to life.
An automaton is a mechanical device designed to mimic the natural movement of a living being, representing a genuine display of creativity and playfulness.
