Overview
The Central Bank of Chile was founded on August 22, 1925, during the presidency of Arturo Alessandri Palma, with the purpose of restructuring the country’s monetary and financial system, safeguarding the stability of the peso, and regulating the issuance of coins and banknotes. Since then, it has played a key role in the national economy, maintaining functions that remain in force to this day.
As part of its educational initiatives, the Bank established the Numismatic Museum, which is part of the program Central en tu vida (Central Bank in Your Life). This space showcases the most comprehensive public collection of Chilean coins and banknotes, featuring around 1,500 original pieces spanning over 500 years of history. Among them are gold and silver coins, national banknotes, specimens from more than 160 countries, and gold ingots. The museum also offers a 360° virtual tour, with selected pieces that allow visitors to explore the country’s numismatic heritage in an interactive way.
