Overview

The Violeta Parra Museum is a beautiful space that offers a profound connection to the enormous artistic, social, and cultural legacy Violeta Parra left to Chile and the world.

As you walk through the museum, you are invited to get to know this remarkable Chilean artist and, through a visual and auditory experience, discover how Violeta Parra rescued the folklore and traditions of the country’s working-class and rural communities. Featuring a collection that blends her visual and musical work, the museum invites you to appreciate a distinctive, independent style that defied the conventions of her time.

Two main halls exhibit her arpillera embroideries, paintings, and papier-mâché works, which are complemented by the museum’s audiovisual spaces. The Museum also houses an Education Room, designed for workshops and equipped with interactive displays that offer a deeper understanding of the context in which Violeta lived and worked. It also features a 100-seat auditorium and a cafeteria, an ideal spot to take a break after your visit.

History

The Violeta Parra Museum is the fulfillment of a long-held dream of the Parra family, particularly the artist’s children, Ángel and Isabel. Through the Violeta Parra Foundation and after years of dedicated work, they succeeded in bringing together the works displayed here today, many of which were scattered across the globe due to the artist’s generous nature, she often gave her creations as gifts to friends and acquaintances.

The works were placed on loan to the Violeta Parra Museum Foundation, an institution created in 2014 specifically to conserve, restore, promote, and highlight the value of this great Chilean artist’s legacy. The building itself is a public work, funded by the State of Chile, and was inaugurated on October 4, 2015, the 98th anniversary of the artist’s birth, in a ceremony led by President Michelle Bachelet.

The Collection

The Violeta Parra Museum’s collection features oil paintings, arpilleras, and papier-mâché works, of which 23 are part of the permanent exhibition, displayed alongside personal objects such as her guitarrón chileno, harp, and sewing machine. Documents tracing the creative process behind her creations are also on view. A selection of these works was previously exhibited at the Museum of Decorative Arts in the Louvre Palace in Paris in 1964.
